The Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) is the largest public multidisciplinary research organisation in Spain (www.csic.es). The CSIC has 126 institutes or centres distributed throughout Spain, including 50 Joint Research Units with universities or other research institutions. It has a staff of more than 13500 employees, among these about 3,500 are permanent researchers and more than 4,000 are pre- and post-doctoral researchers. It has considerable experience in both participating in and managing RTD projects and training of research personnel. Under the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) CSIC signed 404 actions and was the fifth most successful organisation in Europe in project execution and funding in that Framework Programme. Under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) CSIC has signed more than 580 projects (including 38 coordinated by CSIC and 32 ERC) for an amount of more than €190 million.
Three groups within two institutes of CSIC will be involved in the project: one from the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM; Marine Sciences Institute) and two from the Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona (ICMAB; Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona). The main tasks of the CSIC will be in WP4 (leading): integrating transversal sensors, developing new temperature and pressure sensors and in WP7: development of heavy metals sensors.
|The Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM/CSIC) is a reference institution for ocean sciences. The ICM team participating in COMMON SENSE has expertise in adapting a wide range of sensors to autonomous platforms such as drifting buoys and fixed moorings that have been deployed across the oceans. In particular it has contributed to the pioneering experience of adapting an autonomous surface Temperature and Salinity (TS) sensor to a racing vessel participating on the Barcelona World Race (BWR). The system was sending data in real time along the whole track around the world. Finally, the team also has expertise on data validation through satellite and modelling. Website: www.icm.csic.es|
|The Barcelona Institute of Materials Sciance (ICMAB/CSIC) has as a mission: To generate new knowledge in materials science and transfer it to society, particularly to the industrial sector within the European Research Area. Within this remit, the ICMAB discovers new materials, characterises them with advanced research tools and modelling, develops new processes of practical interest, and integrates materials into a variety of devices. Two ICMAB research groups will be involved to the project: NANOMOL (Molecular Nanoscience and Organic Materials Department) and NAPCOM (Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites Group). Website: www.icmab.es|
|NANOMOL has broad expertise and recognised excellence in the synthesis, processing and study of molecular and polymeric materials with chemical, electronic, sensing, magnetic and biomedical properties. The group is actively involved in implementing nanotechnology and sustainable and economically efficient technologies for preparing advanced functional molecular materials. |NAPCOM activity is mainly devoted to the controlled and rational synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles and nanocomposites. This includes the study of their structural and functional properties as well as validation studies for the selected application intended for each material. Jordi Salat: Mathematician. Staff oceanographer. Main research interest relates to in-situ data acquisition, air-sea interactions, oceanic circulation. Participation in international and national scientific projects (four as PI). Participation in oceanographic cruises (more than 750 days at sea). International collaboration as expert with several UN agencies. Co-author of 95 articles (48 in SCI journals). He will be the person in charge of scientific and technical aspects for the tasks assigned.
Emilio García-Ladona: Physicist. Staff Researcher. Main research interest on data analysis techniques, topographic and shelf/slope exchanges, western Mediterranean circulation dynamics, pattern recognition technique applied to remote sensing data, etc. Around 20 years of research activity in national and international projects. Co-author of 65 research publications.
Joaquim Ballabrera-Poy: Physicist. Staff Researcher. Main research interest relates to data assimilation in ocean numeric models, remote sensing, ocean salinity, and ENSO dynamics and prediction. Fifteen years of postdoctoral experience. Co-author of 31 research publications.
Jaume Piera: Electronic engineer and Biologist. Staff Researcher. Main research interest on oceanographic instrumentation, low cost systems, data analysis techniques, and pattern recognition technique applied to remote sensing data and optical data. Around 20 years of research activity in national and international projects (five as PI). Co-author of 38 research publications
Jordi Sorribas: Geologist. Responsible for Information and Communications Technology at the Marine Technology Unit (CSIC).
Prof Concepció Rovira: Staff research professor and Co-director of Nanomol. She is an internationally recognised scientist with expertise in the field of functional molecular materials. Her main activity in the last ten years has been in the field of Molecular and Supramolecular Organic Materials. The principal areas of interest are: Organic metals, p electron donors and acceptors, molecular magnetism, free radicals, high-spin molecules, supramolecular chemistry, crystal engineering, electron and energy transfer processes, molecular electronics, molecular nanoscopic aggregates, and ESR spectroscopy. Prof Rovira has led numerous national and international projects. She has published more than 280 scientific papers.
Prof Jaume Veciana Miró: Staff research professor, Director of the Molecular Nanoscience and Organic Materials Department (NMMO) and Co-director of NANOMOL. He is an internationally recognised scientist with expertise in the field of functional molecular materials. His main research activities are focused on functional molecular materials with metallic, transport and magnetism- properties, supramolecular materials and the development of molecular nanoscience and nanotechnology. His research is also aimed towards the development of new processing methods for structuring functional molecular materials as nanoparticles and their patterning on surfaces. He has led numerous national and international projects. He has published 423 scientific papers and is inventor on 12 patents, four of which are in operation. In addition, Prof Veciana has been awarded, among others, with the XV Solvay Award prize for Science and Research in Chemistry in 2001 and the XV Dupont Award for Science in 2005.
Prof Vladimir Laukhin: Research Professor. (CSIC-ICREA). Prof Laukhin is an internationally recognised scientist with expertise in the field of solid state physics. He has numerous stays as guest professor at various research centres of high level in Europe and in the United States of America and Japan. Prof Laukhin has more than 200 scientific papers and is an inventor on five patents. During his career he has given more than 150 lectures at international conferences.
Dr Elena Laukhina: Researcher. She is an internationally recognised scientist with expertise in the field of molecular electronics. She has had numerous stays as guest researcher in different European research centres. She has published 150 scientific papers and is an inventor on 4 patents.
Dr Raphael Pfattner: Postdoctoral researcher. He is a scientist with experience in the field of organic electronics and organic transistors. He has had numerous stays as a PhD student in different European research centres of high level and has extensive experience in software development and in the practical and theoretical foundations of the technology employed by NANOMOL.
Dr César Díez Gil: Project and technology transfer manager. He holds a PhD in chemistry with experience in the field of molecular materials for environmental and biomedical use. He has published several scientific papers and is co-inventor of two patents. Since 2011 he works as a manager and on technology transfer projects for the group NANOMOL.
Dr César Fernández is a tenured scientist at the Instituto de Microelectrònica de Barcelona, IMB-CNM (CSIC). He has co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and co-supervised two PhD Theses. He has been the PI of several national projects from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and CSIC.
Dr Martí Gich: Physicist and PhD in Materials Science. His work focuses primarily on understanding the structural properties of functional oxides and the preparation of nanoparticles in porous matrices. He also has three years of research experience in industry (Saint Gobain Recherche) and has co-authored 29 articles, been cited 350 times and holds three patents.
Dr Anna Roig: Physicist and a PhD in Materials Science. Senior researcher and currently Deputy-Director of ICMAB and leader of NAPCOM. She has worked at several research labs: the KTH in Sweden and Northeastern University in US. Her main field of expertise is porous materials (silica and carbon) and inorganic nanoparticles. Dr Roig has participated in a number of cooperative research projects at national and transnational level. She has managing experience at National and EC level (previously Seconded National Expert at the EC, DG Research, Industrial Technologies Directorate Value Added Materials Unit). She has supervised eight PhD theses and has co-authored 120 publications with more than 2,800 citations and seven patents.
